Why your personal brand matters

Why your personal brand matters

I love this quote.  I used it recently at a talk I did on building a leadership brand.  However it also perfectly captures why it’s important to consider and think about your personal brand.  Particularly in the world of work.

Your personal brand is who you are and what you stand for. It’s what enables you to do the great stuff only you can do. We all have strengths and even superpowers – those things we’re brilliant at, that no-one else does quite like we do.  But unless we truly capture who we are, what we stand for and translate this into what we do, it’s not always easy for others to see the value of it (and act accordingly).

Defining your personal brand is all about identifying what makes you special and linking this to what you do or want to achieve.

And having a powerful personal brand is about delivering this authentically and consistently, no matter what.  So people know exactly what to expect from you and buy into what you’re trying to do accordingly.

“The question is no longer IF you have a personal brand, but if you choose to guide and cultivate the brand or to let it be defined on your behalf.”

As I’ve said before,  this is not the same as personal branding.  That is how you market yourself.  It helps but unless you’ve articulated your brand first, it won’t be authentic.  Building your personal brand helps you play to your strengths.  It helps you attract the opportunities you’re best placed to make the most of.  And it helps you build a reputation and presence around what you do best.

Find out how we can help you define and build your personal brand.

PS Donald Trump is often cited as having a strong personal brand.  I’m not sure this is true.  I think he just has really good personal branding.
